Across the country, existing home sales rose in all regions except the West. In the Northeast, sales grew 4.8 percent in January to an annual pace of 650,000, up from 620,000 in December and up 12.1 percent from the year before.
In the Midwest, sales increased 3.6 percent to an annual rate of 1.16 million, up from 1.12 million the previous month, and up 17.2 percent from January 2012.
Sales in the South rose just 1.0 percent to an annual pace of 1.96 million in January, up from 1.94 million in December and up 14.0 percent from a year ago.
In the West, sales dropped 5.7 percent, limited by a very tight supply of inventory, to an annual rate of 1.15 million, down from 1.22 million in December and also down 5.7 percent from the previous year.
